Jim Benning and Travis Green Fired

It has been reported this evening by multiple sources that the Vancouver Canucks have made sweeping changes to their organization. Head coach Travis Green is to be replaced by longtime NHL coach Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau is reported to have signed on for a two-year deal, ending at the end of next season.

After 8 years, Jim Benning is finally out as General Manager of the club. The gap left by Benning will be temporarily filled by Chris Gear. Hockey insiders, Elliot Freidman and Chris Gear are reporting that the Interim management will operate collaboratively; under the helm of Chris Gear, Ryan Johnson, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, and Stan Smyl.

Following a lackluster 4-1 loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday, and a jersey being thrown on the ice, it seemed inevitable that changes were going to happen.

Included in the sweeping changes are Assistant General Manager John Weisbrod, and Assistant Coach Nolan Baumgartner. Baumgartner is set to be replaced by Scott Walker.

Continuing to lose winnable games by 1 goal only spelled out this change a few weeks ago. It’s clear that the club took its time when choosing a new coach, but they might just have chosen the right guy. Boudreau in particular is known for getting star players going and given what has started as an underwhelming season for Elias Pettersson, Boudreau may just be what he needs.

Faced with an 8-15-2 record, the playoffs seem like a pipe dream, but this decision seems like a catalyst to spark something within the club’s core players. This sweeping culture change might just be it.

The Canucks are set to take on the LA Kings Monday night, we’ll see if this decision will lead to a bounce back winning streak.
